Nasser Zahrani is a Saudi poet. The following lines are taken from one of his poems. They tell the story of how he was manipulated in order to take a second wife. He says,
Advisers came saying, “You are brave and tactful,
Why keep with one woman who goes under the weather?
At menstruation, you cannot touch her and after having a baby too,
Get a second wife to live free from woe.”
I said, “GOD forbid. One wife has turned white my hair.
Why get more of that?”
They said, “Prophet’s tradition goes un-followed? Where are the Zealots?”
I said, “You no longer follow more important Prophet’s traditions!
You even skip some obligatory acts, why polygamy?!
I have my Lord’s law inside my heart; I do my best in following Prophet’s tradition,
If true necessity occurs, one may consider polygamy.
Even then, strict conditions of justice and obligations must be watched,
And I have had lots of wrong deeds and sins; I need to bear no more.
Besides, dealing with women is like a roaring sea with no shores.”
They said, “You’re a fearful coward!” By that they lit fire inside my heart and mind,
Under that pressure, I took a second wife.
